Service Learning (SL) Programme
Guided by community-based learning approach and service-learning pedagogy, Service Learning (SL) serves as a platform for Values in Action (VIA). It strives to encourage Saints with a heart to serve and be involved in community building so as to develop in them a strong sense of empathy, social and civic responsibility and become active citizens of Singapore. SL connects Saints to social issues involving the local community and provides hands-on opportunities for Saints to organise and lead in addressing the social issues facing our local community.
JC 1 and JC 2 Service Learning Project
Service Learning Day is a day set aside for all students to participate in a local community project. Started in 2004, this programme aims to provide more opportunities for students to look beyond themselves and serve to those in need.
Each Civics Class is required to identify a community in need, scope a project and lastly execute the project. During this process, their Civics Tutor will act as mentor as the students develop their own SL Projects over a 4 month period. The programme follows the SL methodology where both meeting the needs of the community and the learning derived from the service are as important.
CCA Community Involvement Programme
CCA are also strongly encouraged to embark on community service programme. CCA such as Interact Club, Mentoring Club and Environment provides a good platform for students to embark on CCA programmes that seek to address different social needs in Singapore. Other examples of CCA SL are sports CCA conducting sports programme for under-privileged kids or providing support for sports events, fundraising etc.
OTHERS; Flag Day, Social Entrepreneurship Programme, Youth for Causes and SAGE etc.
Students are also provided with opportunities to embark on their own SL projects or community involvement programme (CIP). They are strongly encouraged to take part in programmes e.g. Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH) and Kidney Dialysis Foundation. Such programmes provide a rich platform to learn useful entrepreneurship with a social aim in mind.
Apart from teachers participating in the JC 1 and JC 2 SL projects with their civics class, staffs gets together for 2 CIP events per year. In the beginning of the year, staff get together to make hampers for the beneficiaries e.g. Lions Befrienders, HCA Hospice Care, to bring Chinese New Year cheers to the families. A fund-raising event, Hearty breakfast also aims to raise funds through potluck. All proceeds goes to our long term partners.
SAINTS ADVOCATE – Advocating Changes, Inspiring Lives
Saints Advocate is a leadership CCA pioneered in 2010 which aims to develop leadership skills and build character through community service. Their main aim is to advocate different causes to raise awareness within the community sector [Elderly, Children, and Minority groups, Disabled, Environment and Animals].
If you have the passion for serving the community, inspiring others to do the same and lending a voice to speak up for different causes; Saints Advocate welcome you into our family. Please refer to http://saintsadvocate.blogspot.sg/?m=1 (for past works) and saintsadvocate.wordpress.com (from 2016 onwards) for more details.
The SL programme will not be successful without its partnership with community development agencies. The college continues to seek and develop partnership for community involvement programmes. The college has worked with organisations on regular programmes such as Central Singapore Community Development Council (Central Singapore, CDC), Kreta Ayer - Kim Seng Grassroot Organisation (Kim Seng GRO), Singapore Heart Foundation, Metropolitan YMCA, HCA Hospice Care, Simei Care Centre etc.
